Christmas Celebrations

Nick and Meadow's family arrived at our home on Sunday, and we opened gifts and were entertained by the kiddos. Nicky sang us several renditions of Killers songs mixed in with snowman lyrics, replete with his own vibrato effects. Tressa led the singing from the top of the stairs and kept asking throughout the day when we could open the gifts. Her favorite was a porcelain Indian doll from Mom. We made a teepee for it out of tissue paper and kabob skewers. Hyrum was elated about a shirt I gave him, which was a surprise for me. What kids like getting clothes? He couldn't get it on fast enough, and it ended up upside-down with the collar at his waist, but he was still happy! Meadow made gorgeous, intricate paper flowers to decorate the packages. I think mine and Corey's favorite gift was a coupon from Mike good for house cleaning and dish doing- awesome!
Hyrum and Adam Jack getting into treats in the pantry- the one thing they can share! Most of the time, they did not get along well. Doesn't Hyrum look like Gabie here?

Adam Jack was 90% asleep, but insisted that Missy finish feeding him his Cocoa Puffs- so hilarious!

Adam Jack's stylish 'do.

Zachary Chronicles- Week 4

For awhile, I kept waiting for this kid's real parents to come pick him up, but I guess they're letting us have him for keeps. I guess it's finally feeling like he really is ours. I suppose the pregnancy hormones and pain and healing clouded my thinking for a few weeks, but it really felt like, "Where did he come from? How long does he plan on staying?" I don't know, it just took some getting used to after over thirty years of not being a parent to realize he's here for good, and I'm on duty 24/7 for the next 18 or so years. It'll be fun, right?!
So today marks 4 weeks. Weird. It feels like I was just in labor yesterday. I think Zachary likes to commemorate his entrance into the world by being wide awake every Tuesday morning at 4am. He wants to relive the experience, or just remind us of when he came, or something. That's what pictures and journals are for, son. He still has sleep struggles. Last night he slept from 1am-4am. That was nice. He's starting to smile more and more, which is a joy. It makes those late nights worth it. He is super strong and always trying to lift his head and upper body. I think he'll follow in his cousin Katie's footsteps and be doing sit-ups by 9 months (or was it 7?).
Another fun thing he does is sleep with his arms sticking straight out in the air, like Superman about to take flight. I can barely hold my arms out for 30 seconds before they are too tired to stay up. I guess it's easier when they only weigh a few ounces each!
Corey had 4 days off this weekend and spent every moment with Zach while I was able to rest and run errands. I was gone for several hours a few times, and I missed the baby fiercely. I read this magazine article about a mom going back to work after her baby was born, and I almost cried. I'm sure there will be more tears to come in that arena. . . I now feel so bad for hustling Corey out the door back to work when Zach was only a couple of days old. Corey was fighting it, but didn't have enough paid leave to take much time off. It is mean that hardly anyone offers paid maternity/paternity leave. I would be happy to pay a few more tax dollars to ensure that all new parents each received at least one week of paid leave following their child's birth. It is vital to their emotional and physical well-being. In Canada and much of Europe, parents are given from 6-12 months off paid after a baby's birth. They pay a ton in taxes, but at least it is an aim to helping society. Okay, I'm off my political soapbox. Happy 4 weeks, Baby!

Christmas Plans

We decided the family's getting too big and we are too poor to buy everyone individual gifts, so we are going to start a rotation that will change every year. This year it will start with giving a gift/gifts to the couple just younger than you. Next year it will be the sibling younger than last year's, and so on. Just give whatever you can afford and are comfortable giving- no minimum, no maximum. Some of my very favorite gifts have been when others share their talents through song, art, or handicrafts. Or a new car, what have you. We just want it to be as stress free as possible while still keeping the giving spirit.

Also, everyone is invited to spend as much time at Noelle and Corey's as you wish. We will probably be going to Idaho on the eve of the 23 or the 24th, and returning the eve of the 26th or morn of the 27th, depending on weather conditions and health factors, and what everyone else's plans are.

We will be blessing our baby on Sunday, December 28 here in Pleasant Grove at 9am, so please make plans to be here.

Happy Holidays!

Noelle and Corey have Nick and Meadow's family
Nick and Meadow have Natalie and Ryan
Nat and Ry have Missy and Adam
Missy and Adam have Mike
Mike has Noelle and Corey

If you want to contribute to a group gift for Mom and Dad, let Missy or Noelle know.

Giving Thanks

We had a lovely Thanksgiving here in Pleasant Grove. Grandma Malan, Missy, Adam, and Adam Jack, Mom, Erica, Mike, Corey, Zach, and I had a delicious turkey with Missy's fabulous rolls, Erica's delightful green bean casserole, and potatoes, gravy, stuffing, Snickers apple salad, and Razzleberry pie. Yum!!! We have so much to be grateful for. Mostly, I was grateful to be surrounded by our family and especially our newest addition. But we are so blessed to have warm homes, running cars, rewarding jobs, food on the table, and so many other miracles in our lives that most people in the world do not enjoy.

I'm Thankful for our Family!

So November has been an exciting month for the family. We got to see Nick, Meadow, and the kids, which was an absolute delight. We hope to see them again soon for the holidays. They were all here to see their new baby cousin, Zachary Alexander Wilhelmsen, and to intruduce him to the family. Tressa was especially helpful with the new baby. She is a great big sister and cousin. Hyrum made an Ironman mask out of a crown turned upside down. He is very smart and creative. Nicholas is an expert at operating the fishing pole Mom got him. Unfortunately, it got left behind here at our house, but he can get it at Christmas time. Erica has been a huge help with the baby, holding him while I got some much-needed rest. She is a delight to have around. She is an awesome pianist, so I vote for her so that she and Ryan can lead us all in a jam session. She and Mike have helped us out through the lest leg of my pregnancy with tidying the house and always having an entertaining game of Five Crowns going. Dad was taking care of Adam Jack on Saturday and gave him this sweet hairdo after Dad got peed on (funny story- Missy forgot to put a diaper on him. Cute onsie and overalls, but going Commando underneath!) and slimed with blueberry yogurt- what a good sport!

Mom is officially the first member of the family to break a bone, and it was a doozy. I had just started having contractions, and was up in my bedroom. I knew Mom wanted to help, so I asked her to come upstairs. She must have thought I was actually birthing the baby, because she came racing up the stairs so fast that she rolled her foot and heard a bunch of cracking. She hardly missed a beat, and crawled up to my room to see what I needed, ready to deliver her grandchild if needed. We didn't know how serious it was because of the intensity of my labor. She even went back downstairs and started doing the dishes and shattered a glass on her hand. Mikey had to play doctor to her and force her to sit and settle down for awhile before any further damage was done. She is so sweet and selfless that she even came to the hospital at 1am to see if she could help. She should've stopped in at the x-ray department while she was there, but she didn't end up going to the doctor for several days after. The x-ray showed a huge diagonal crack on her outer foot bone. The poor dear is still hobbling around with it. At least she has a valid excuse to use sick leave while she is also here helping me with the baby. Poor Mom!
We love you all so much and hope you all have a wonderful Thanksgiving and hopefully we can all be together again soon.

Halloween at the Wilhelmsens

Halloween was low-key at our house this year, since we didn't know if we'd have a little pumpkin yet or not. Missy the milk maid and Adam Jack the cow came over for awhile. Tessa and Sam came with their brood also. Corey was an OSU fan--he dresses up like that every Saturday! Noelle was a white-trash pregnant girl, wearing a shirt that Mom actually purchased for her- yikes!
Mike and Erica also spent the evening with us watching a movie. It was fun.

Nicholas' Turn

Nicholas follows one week behind his sweet wife at turning the big 30. 30 is a huge step. It means you are officially on your way to getting old. :) Nick is an amazing person. His strong determination and hard work at juggling medical school and a young family are an inspiration to everyone. I don't know how he does it- I could barely take care of myself through dental school- Corey had to fend for himself! Nick has a great sense of humor, which is part of his charisma that has always drawn others easily to him. He has always been a natural leader. When he was running for 7th grade class president, he came to me early in the day very worried because he had forgotten his speech at home. I don't even remember what he said in front of 400 students at the assembly, but it didn't matter, because he won by a landslide. I know he will be a wonderful physician that will easily trust due to his calm and comforting manner.
He loves his children more than anything, and is a loving father to them. We all hope your 30th year is your best yet, Nick!

Meadow Turns the BIG 30!!

Meadow couldn't be more Alexander without having actually been born into our family, (but that would be kind of gross!). We are so glad that Nick found this missing link, because she belongs with us! We are so honored to have such a talented, amazing addition to our clan. She cooks better than Rachel Ray, she dances better that Brittney Spears, she sings better than Celine Dion, her mothering skills surpass the Supernanny, she's the spiritual equivalent of Sheri Dew, and she's hotter than Cindy Crawford- what doesn't this woman do? She is so fun-loving, has assisted in producing the world's cutest kids, and has selflessly helped support her husband through the travails of medical school. Meadow, we love and adore you. Thank you so much for being a part of our crazy clan!

Kauai memories

This hike was the awesomest thing we've ever done. I still can't believe we made it. Next time, I'm taking a kayak instead!

alexpalooza

Guys,
That rocked! Highlights of the reunion according to Ryan, Nat and mom: arts and crafts 2008, baby fest, Tressa's cute teeth and tough attitude when she crashed on the zipline, the time when the manager asked "You didn't actually ride on the zipline did you?" and I totally him yes, but we will not sue them, card games, stratego, atv-ing!! especially on that magical spot that Nick & Meadow found, the really awkward scripture/share what makes you happy fiasco, - NAT. "I don't know, it was just fun", says Ryan, "Well, there was the Mikey dancin' and Tressa hurting her face and the art project, and the singing." Mom said: I loved everything about the reunion, but what I loved most was getting my whole, whole family under one roof, and how good you all were to each other, and the magic of family. It was healing and refreshing." Thank you all for your great efforts to get there: especially nick and meadow guys, and mike, and even nat, missy and noelle families--- you didn't sacrifice much except your husbands taking off extra work since they actually thought people would be on time. I imagine it was well worth it to be able to hand out with the only and one Natalie Jan. But honestly, I know it was hard for Mike to get over and for Nick and Meadow to drive 10 hours after an intense month or year or 2 years of studying and taking a tough test... only to be turned away from reno to stay in loveland. We love you all!

Alexanderland Extravaganza

Well, it's almost here, the Alexanderpalooza. We have rented a great cabin in Heber that has a hot tub, air hockey, foosball, and pool table (as far as I understand). We will have some fun activities planned, but will also focus on some great relaxation- any suggestions are appreciated. We can't wait to see you there!!!
